How to Choose the Best Nose Aesthetics?
Look around you…
Notice that some faces and even some noses are more attractive. So why do you like them? What is the source of your liking, what do you find aesthetic in rhinoplasty turkey? Have you ever liked the tip of a nose and disliked the arch on the bridge, or you like it general except for the nostrils? Did you notice that while making this evaluation, we actually divided the nose into aesthetic sub-units? We call the parts of the nose, such as the tip of the nose, the bridge, and the nostrils, as nasal aesthetic sub-units. The ratio of these structures to each other, their harmony with other facial structures, perhaps your eyebrow design, their relationship with your cheekbones and chin, the ovality of your forehead, etc. There can be many more reasons. That’s why we find some faces or noses more attractive and sexier. And nose aesthetics or rhinoplasty as it is more professionally called is the art of creating noses that are perceived as more beautiful, the art of rhinoplasty, that magnificent art that we enjoy.
The nose is not only a part of our face, it is a magnificent structure that stands right in the middle of our mechanism of perceiving the person in front of us. We always see it first. It is the first to tell us whether a face is attractive or not. The nose establishes a perception about our character. If it’s overly arched and bony, it makes us look tough, if it’s flat, it looks old and sad. This organ, right in the middle of our face, truly constitutes the center of our perception of attractiveness. This organ, which has an important task such as breathing as well as being the perception of attractiveness, has a composition consisting of both skin, cartilage and bone structures. This composite structure is both the difficult and enjoyable side of rhinoplasty. The problem in rhinoplasty may belong to any or all of these structures.
When searching for the best rhinoplasty method, we are obliged to choose the techniques that have mastered all of these structures and the one that will create the least trauma to the nose. Because of the membranes called perichondrium on the cartilage tissues and their own elasticity, they have a compulsion to return to their former shape. Therefore, rhinoplasty is a type of surgery in which knowledge, skills and experience gain importance. In fact, “complications are only a matter of time” and rhinoplasty can always surprise you, regardless of your level of experience. Rhinoplasty is developed the best through experience in nose aesthetics. What our experience tells us is that closed rhinoplasty techniques are the best rhinoplasty method. Even if it is possible and the patient is suitable, it is best to crown the procedure with let down rhinoplasty.
If you are ready, let the change start now.
Why do we do Nose Aesthetics?
Primarily, we do rhinoplasty to feel good about ourselves. The nose is the reflection of our face, which is our identity in social life, and it is directly related to personal self-confidence. Looking better generates feeling better and self-confidence. Confidence means a better life, a better relationship means a happier life. Let’s face it, take a look at your earliest memories: we always chose the attractive one, we always gave a bonus to the beautiful one, and the higher salary J. If there is no medical obstacle, why not have a better outlook? Who can blame the courting peacock for displaying its beautiful tail? Do it if possible …
Of course, rhinoplasty alone is not enough. It is necessary to preserve the functional structure of the nose, and correct problems, if any. What are these functions: breathing, proper humidification of the air, smell and, of course, its contribution to taste. Phonation and tone adjustment in speech, acting as a security barrier to the immune system, etc. Another interesting nose function hails to a case in the seventeenth century. I came across this case in the anatomy textbook of our teacher Fahri Dere. A case of nose bleeding was determined whenever the incumbent saw a beautiful woman has been recorded. There is a point in our nose that has lost its characteristics in humans although it is very active in animals. The structure called the vomeronasal region, which has a different nerve density, acts as an erogenous stimulation center. Discovering scent molecules that stimulate this point is what many perfume brands are after. It’s called an aphrodisiac in popular culture. Does that sound familiar…
Who Should have Nose Aesthetics?
Who should have a rhinoplasty? In fact, if a rhinoplasty is planned in the concept of plastic surgery, this expectation can also prevent functional results. Generally, many aesthetic surgery patients can define the need for rhinoplasty in different ways, even if not functionally. In this case, when planning a rhinoplasty, it should be well planned whether it is really necessary or how it will affect the functional results. If our subject is not functional, what limits us is the age limit which is eighteen for boys and seventeen for girls. And of course, there should not be a medical obstacle to surgery.
How is Nose Aesthetics done?
It is necessary to understand the anatomical and physiological substructure of the nose very well to achieve perfect results in rhinoplasty. We have mentioned that the nose is divided into aesthetical sub-units. We call these the aesthetic sub-units of the Nose. These are;
- Radix: nasal root
- Dorsum: bridge of the nose
- Tip: nose tip
- Lateral wall: nasal lateral wall
- Columella: When we look at the base of the nose, the column separating the right and left nostrils
- Alar wing: nostril
- Alar base: nose base
Of course, apart from the aesthetic classification of the nose, bone cartilage, mucous membrane and skin parts that make up the nose are connected to each other with extremely fine details, creating a perfect harmony. Since the first half of the twentieth century, almost all of these structures were studied separately to create more attractive noses and these studies continue. The biggest difference of rhinoplasty compared to other surgical procedures is that the result we get in terms of surgery changes over time and it is necessary to calculate the direction and severity of this change. This calculation is made by remodeling the anatomical and physiological foundations mentioned above with experienc
The history of rhinoplasty is quite old.
In the 3000s B.C., the noses of sex workers in India were cut off to mark them in society. Such cases were treated by a physician called Sushruta Samita, who was known as a healer at that time, using tissue from the forehead. In 1887, after Roe made the definition of closed rhinoplasty to the scientific community, people learned that they could change their noses not only for breathing but also aesthetically. The first rhinoplasty was a closed rhinoplasty. Pay attention to this point… Closed rhinoplasty was a difficult surgical procedure to learn because no one else could see it. Therefore, out of necessity, fifty years after the discovery of closed rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty was discovered, or rather defined. And since that day, our knowledge of nose anatomy, our experience in surgery and technology related to rhinoplasty have changed and brought us closer to what is better, what is more attractive. Of course, our changing understanding of beauty has been the most important driving force of this change.
What is an Arched Nose?
The word arch is a definition that starts with Seljuk architecture and continues with the Ottoman Empire. At least that’s what I know. If you have a protrusion on the back of your nose that distorts the linearity upwards, it means you have an arched nose. In our country, as you go to the Black Sea, the rate of arched noses increases. This is not a situation that challenges surgery. In fact, the extent of change is enjoyable as it portrays us as noble people…
What is Septum Deviation?
There are two walls on the right and left sides of our nose. In the middle is a wall that divides our nose into two. This wall that divides our nose in two is called the septum. It has a similar meaning in Latin. The structure we call septum consists of cartilage on the lower side of our nose and a fine bone on the upper side. This structure, which we call the septum, starts from the nostrils and continues until the opening we call the pharynx. Sometimes our nose is crooked congenitally and sometimes from received blows. Sometimes the septum curves even though the nose is in place. When the septum is crooked the condition is referred to as septum deviation. Depending on the degree of this condition, it can cause respiratory distress. Some septum deviations can be corrected without touching the roof of the nose, but some may require changing the shape of the nose. The path to be followed can be determined with a simple examination.
What is a Thick-Skinned Nose
Now we will do a simple study with you. Check the thickness of your skin at the root of your nose. This is almost the thinnest part of the nose skin. If you go down slowly, your nose skin starts to thicken approximately at the midpoint of the nose. This point where the change occurs is very clear. This is a normal anatomy. On the other hand a thick-skinned nose is not an absolute formula or criterion for this thickening, but is completely shaped by experience. Again, I can give you some hints so that you have an idea;
- Thick-skinned noses can have an orange peel-like skin (these are rhinophyma of various stages)
- It is more difficult to feel cartilage at the tip of the nose in thick-skinned noses.
- In thick-skinned noses, the lower half of the nose appears unrefined.
- Thick-skinned noses are more oily
Of course, this does not mean that our thick-skinned patients cannot have rhinoplasty. It just means that there will be more swelling during the healing process and it will be more difficult to overcome and the time required for the nose to settle fully will be a little longer, that’s all.
What is a Crooked Nose
In fact, we all have asymmetry in our faces. Because during the embryonic development of our face, our right and left sides develop from different sides of the growth plate and these structures meet at the middle point. Since our nose rises on this pedestal, there are differences on the right and left sides.
It is not as important a problem as some people tend to exaggerate, on the contrary, it is our natural structure. Here is this asymmetry, which we say is natural in the skeleton of our middle face, where our nose is based, if it is too much, our nose can look very crooked. Of course, some traumas can also cause nasal curvature. The shape of the curvature in the nose affects the success of the nasal curvature correction surgery. Of course, since this curvature continues not only in the image but also inside, septum deviation repair needs to included in the surgery.
What is Concha growth
We talked about heating and humidifying inhaled air within the functions of our nose. Our nose has a shelf system that performs this task in an ergomomic way as the air passes, which is called the concha. In the center of this structure that we can think of as shelves is a bone that is surrounded with mucosa. We can compare this to the carburetor cooling system in a car. These shapes resemble horns extending from the side wall of the nose. These structures are commonly known as nose meat. Conchas can grow excessively, sometimes structurally and sometimes triggered by allergens. There is no criterion to describe excessive, however if the concha has reached the size to prevent the passage of air entering the nose, concha hypertrophy, that is, concha growth has occurred. If there is an enlargement in the turbinate, that is, in the concha, that will cause breathing difficulties, it should be reduced by surgical intervention and the airway should be opened. Surgical procedure for turbinate enlargement can of course be performed together with rhinoplasty.
Can Snoring Be Corrected With Nose Aesthetics?
As the air enters through the nostrils and flows towards our nasal passages, it should proceed along a regular route, that is, with a laminar flow, and should only flip at the high points of the nose. This described flow is a normal anatomical flow. If this flow is disrupted, a turbulence that would not have happened before can occur and cause snoring. This flow can sometimes be caused by concha growth, sometimes by deviation of the septum, and sometimes by nasal deformity. If the cause of snoring is due to airflow deterioration and the airflow is impaired as a result of these anatomical structures, your snoring problem will be resolved during rhinoplasty.
However, I want you to know that this is not the cause of most snoring. The most common cause of snoring is a loose and sagging soft palate. If this is the case the problem should be corrected with surgical procedures on the soft palate or uvula.
What is nasal tip aesthetics? To whom is it done?
The tip of the nose, that is, the tip area, is one of the sub-units of nasal aesthetics. If you really don’t have any other problems with your nose, you can have nasal tip aesthetics only. Let’s explain this a little. You have no arch on your nose that bothers you, the width is within the ideal limits, your nostrils are OK, your columella angle is also good and only the tip of the nose spoils everything, you can just have the nose tip corrected..
Non-surgical rhinoplasty, What is nasal filling?
Nasal filling, also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty, is one of the popular applications of recent years. Furthermore, this strange popularity of nasal filling also shows us how unfounded the patient’s fears can be. As its name implies, it is a filler, that is, a substance that fills a void. Let’s think about it, instead of surgically removing the excess hump on the bridge of the nose, people who complain about their nasal arch have the arch camouflaged by having the arch evened out with filler in front and behind it, bringing the height of each side to the height of the nasal arch. Sometimes it is done to raise the tip of the nose in a way that disrupts the cartilage structure. As it turns out, it is obvious that the volume of your nose will grow to boot. In other words, all filling applications enlarge the nose. While the fear of surgery makes you have a nose filling and disguises your arch, you actually get a less refined nose. Enlarging a nose with filler does not fit my understanding of aesthetics. I prefer to apply nasal fillings only after surgery, if I see a minimal deformity that is not worth a second operation.
Is There an Age Limit for Nose Aesthetics?
The earliest age limit for rhinoplasty is seventeen for girls and eighteen for boys. This one-year age difference is due to the difference in ossification between boys and girls. However, rhinoplasty can be planned at an earlier age in severe respiratory distress of the type closely related to the shape of the nose, and in some congenital deformities (such as cleft lip nose-CLN).
What Types of Nose Aesthetic Surgeries are available?
Nose aesthetic surgeries are basically divided into two main groups as open and closed. In addition, there are many sub-techniques of rhinoplasty. These methods can either be classified under open or closed rhinoplasty, or named after the technology-device that is used, or the whole operation can be referred to with a maneuver or have been commercially derived with a new name. Now, without going into technical details, I would like to give information about these types of rhinoplasty at a comprehensible level. But let’s classify them first;
- Open Rhinoplasty
- Closed Rhinoplasty
- Letdown Rhinoplasty
- Preservation Rhinoplasty
- Ultrasonic Piezo Nose Aesthetics
- Laser Nose Aesthetics
- Micromotor Nose Aesthetics
What is Open Rhinoplasty
It is a method that was defined fifty years after the discovery of closed rhinoplasty. In principle, an incision is made on the middle wall, which we call columella, at the base of the nose, and the nose skin is lifted from the underlying cartilage and bone and the nose is shaped. Surgical scars on the columella are also not uncommon. In fact, open rhinoplasty emerged because surgeons who practiced closed rhinoplasty had been practicing this technique without teaching and spreading it like a cult for many years. However, nowadays, the method is defended with a commercial discourse such as “the tip of the nose is opened to see it better”. However, the truth of the matter is that every method gives good results in the hands of its master. And those who say that the surgeon cannot interfere with the tip of your nose in closed rhinoplasty make me laugh as much as the old surgeons who say that the gallbladder cannot be removed properly with laparoscopic surgery and must be done open.
What is Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty is a surgical technique performed by making an incision in the columella without collecting the skin at the root of the nose. This is why it is commonly known as scarless rhinoplasty. Of course, there are incisions in closed rhinoplasty, otherwise we would not be able to reach the cartilage and bone. Only these incisions remain inside the nostrils. I think the most advantageous aspect of closed rhinoplasty (traceless closed rhinoplasty) is that the result is visible throughout the entire procedure. In closed rhinoplasty, the elasticity of the nasal skin does not change throughout the case and you continue your procedure by seeing the result of the nose in front of your eyes at any moment. Of course, the absence of an incision and suture marks in the columella also has a serious perceptional advantage. In my adventure with plastic surgery that I started in 2002, I was instructed in closed rhinoplasty, I had extensive experience in open rhinoplasty between 2008-2011 and I continue to focus on closed rhinoplasty again. I see closed rhinoplasty as a much less traumatic, safe and stable technique. If this work can be done with less trauma and incisions, I believe that should be done. Maybe I think so because it gives me the best results. What do you think?
What is Septorhinoplasty?
While talking about the anatomy of the nose and the function of the nose, the septum was also mentioned. During my life as a surgeon, I have indeed seen flat septums in very few people. Despite small deviations, respiratory distress is very rare. If you have septum deviation, that is, septum curvature that will cause respiratory distress, this problem can be fixed at the same time as your rhinoplasty surgery and this is called septorhinoplasty.
What is Letdown Rhinoplasty
Whether the procedure is open or closed, when the bone and cartilage structures on the bridge of the nose are interfered, some superficial roughness may occur when the nasal arches are cut. These structures are living tissues and try to heal by thinking that they have been injured after surgery. During this process, there is a small risk of irregularity on the bridge of the nose. As a result of the wonderful work of French surgeon Yves Saban, the direction of rhinoplasty has changed all over the world. In the let down technique, the bridge of the nose is protected. Well, if you ask me how will the arch be eliminated if the bridge of the nose is protected, let me briefly explain it as follows. In the letdown rhinoplasty technique, the high nasal ridge is lowered by subtracting from the base of the nose, not from the bridge. The subject still maintains its novelty and continues to evolve rapidly. In almost every congress and meeting, a new manipulation enters our literature. If you want more information about letdown rhinoplasty, you can go to https://www.ozanbalik.com/en/preservation-letdown-rhinoplasty/ and read my article.
Preservation Rinoplasti Nedir
It means rhinoplasty performed with a “preservation” or ‘protective’ approach. So what is protected? When letdown rhinoplasty first came to the fore in our country, some surgeons preferred to call it preservation rhinoplasty because the bridge was being protected. The technique is the same as in letdown.
What is Ultrasonic Piezo Nose Aesthetics
It is a small saw shape developed to cut the bone on the side wall of the nose. The difference is that what moves the saw is ultrasonic sound waves that vibrate tens of thousands of times per second, causing the bone to be cut like butter. The tip of the piezo saw is equipped with a continuous water washing system to avoid burning the tissues. Using this device to cut bone is just a personal preference, it makes no special contribution to the rhinoplasty technique.
What is Micromotor Nose Aesthetics
The micromotor saw option was available before the invention of the ultrasonic piezo nose saw. The basic principle and application area are the same. The only difference is that instead of vibrations, bone tissues are cut with miniscule back and forth swings. Again, in my opinion, using this device to cut bone is just a personal preference, it makes no special contribution to the rhinoplasty technique. The device can give good results in skillful hands.
What is Nose Aesthetics with Laser
I can understand rhinoplasty with a micromotor and ultrasonic piezo saw. After all, everyone cuts the tissue with whatever comes easy for them. The principle of both is mechanical. However, the laser issue is very different. As a people, we think that whatever is a product of the Japanese cartoons of our childhood, even if it is an American invention, is the most beautiful and the most wonderful thing ever. In fact, that school of thought is pure nonsense. The idea that in rhinoplasty, cutting should be done with a laser was a commercial fantasy that tried to gain hold. However, the color and water ratios of the tissues in the nose created more tissue trauma than imagined because there is not enough tissue selectivity. It is an application that ended the way it started in the world.
Which Technologies Do I Use in Rhinoplasty?
Surgeons are actually conservative people, we cannot change our technique or surgical principles like changing clothes. Plastic surgeons, on the other hand, are the ones who adapt to change the fastest among all these surgical branches. However, I do not think that pressure from my patients (from a market aspect) to expect innovation from me is fair. If something is going to change in a surgeon’s practice, it should aim to correct any deficiencies in his technique and improvement. In my own surgery, I mostly perform rhinoplasty using hand tools that are among the international classics and tools that I have designed and made. I tried the ultrasonic piezo saw and the micromotor and did not like them. I still believe that the best sculptures are sculpted with classical hand tools, the best paintings are painted with classical brushes, and the piano should be unplugged J.
What Does Natural and Cool Nose Aesthetics Mean?
What the patient understands and what we are trying to deliver with a natural and cool nose is this;
- Natural Nose: a nose does not show any signs of surgery and no one can tell that it has undergone surgery.
- Cool Nose: a nose that is assertive and your friends say wow, what a great nose
- It should not look conspicuous: people should not be able to tell that it is man made, the desire to convince everyone that it is inherent…
Well? Is it clear
Digital 3D Simulation Rhinoplasty
Before rhinoplasty in our clinic, I make a simulation of the photos of the nose and show it to our patients. I always emphasize the following while showing it. “No matter how many dimensions are involved, this is a simple picture after all. It can display the truth up to a point. Our purpose in making these designs is to show you what I imagine on your face when I look at you and to understand you. After all, what I can do to your face while you sleep will be limited to what I can imagine.
Who is the best Nose Aesthetics Doctor?
Of course, you want to have this surgery once and get a good result. It’s easy to understand. Now you want to find the best rhinoplasty doctor. We plastic surgeons receive similar training and read the same books, but we all have different aesthetic perceptions and expectations. Let me tell you a secret about this; “The best rhinoplasty doctor for you is the one you believe has the same aesthetic perception as you and feels your energy”. You can encounter some surprise problems during the process. This can happen. If you can look at the world from the same window with your doctor, even if you encounter these possible problems, you can get on a level with your doctor very easily and pleasantly.
Preparations Before Nose Aesthetics
You should also have a preparation process for rhinoplasty. You need to determine what kind of nose you want. Are your expectations realistic? It is important to question yourself. Have you chosen a suitable plastic surgeon for you? We plastic surgeons all have our own style, and when you choose a doctor, you will have chosen his style. If so, you must first determine your own style.
The Nose Aesthetics Process at Bravo Hair Clinic
- In the first meeting about rhinoplasty in our clinic, our aim is to to introduce ourselves, our technique, and our philosophy of looking at rhinoplasty, so that we can clarify whether we look at the world from the same window. I call this surgical trust. First we need to establish trust.
- Then we move on to correcting most of the opinions you have gained from google, social media and other physician interviews. J. We will talk about ourselves again. Not to convince you but so you understand us. You will make the choice.
- If your nose has not been touched before, we will definitely show you how we will get results with a simulation study.
- When you decide after the examination, my assistants lay your surgery options in front of you, determine your reservation, and choose the hospital where you will be operated.
- Taking your pre-operative photos is a must for all aesthetic surgery applications. We’ll take pictures as we find you. Don’t worry, they are never shared without permission and are stored on encrypted disks.
- Payment plans will be reconciled.
- You will be sent off to meet at the hospital 2 hours before on the operation day. During the Corona period, we may have to request additional tests.
- Since your reservations are completed on the morning of the operation, you will be admitted to the hospital quickly, standard tests are performed before the operation. If you have a special situation, we should have prepared the consultations beforehand.
- You will be examined by the anesthesiologist.
- After saying good morning in your room, you are administered a sedative before you are taken to the operating room.
- After a short preparation which passes on the clouds with the effect of the sedative, you are taken to the room where you will be operated and put to sleep.
- The relatives of patients cannot participate in this fun J. We have a 30-minute preparation inside. The patient is held under observation for 30-60 minutes after the end of the procedure. Do not skip this detail.
- The essence of our primary rhinoplasty surgery is 1.5 hours.
- After being taken from the operating room to your room, you will be completely by yourself. You just get some sleep.
- It is extremely beneficial to apply ice intensively. We will be doing this to the rhythm of 30 min. of application with 10 min. intervals.
- It would be reasonable to spend that night in the hospital because of the general anesthesia.
- It is quite normal for some blood to leak from the tip of the nose and the nasal passages.
- Since we will not use tampons for rhinoplasty, there is nothing to keep that blood in the nose. It is not irritating as the amount is minimal.
- Like I said, we do not use tampons, only a silicone splint will be in the nose so that there is no adhesion to the fresh incisions and the swelling does not block your airway.
- I will discharge you the next morning after checking you over in your room and giving your prescription.
- On your first control we will remove the plastic plaster called a splint approximately 7 days later to be replaced with a paper bandage which will stay for 7 days.
- On the next meeting 7 days later, you will be at our clinic to have the paper tapes removed. If it is inconvenient for you to come to the clinic, it is possible to remove the tapes by soaking them in the bathroom.
- We like see patients close to us at the end of the first month, on the 3rd, 6th, 12th The frequency of this plan can be increased depending on your status. We can usually see our overseas patients through photographs after removing their splint and only see them one year later.
Will my nose look natural?
This is a legitimate concern because there are many bad examples around us. Today, the goal of rhinoplasty is to indiscernible. Of course, these noses must be fully functional. The best way to plan this is with simulation studies. Of course, a computer will not operate on your nose, but this is the best way you can plan your expectations with your doctor before the operation.
Is the post operative period after rhinoplasty very painful?
Contrary to popular belief, rhinoplasty is not a painful operation. Because like all surgeries, your incisions are closed and there is no pain because there are no open tissues. You only feel fullness due to bloating, which is normal and is over before you know it.
Will There Be Bruising or Swelling After Nose Aesthetics?
The bones, cartilage and soft tissues that make up your nose is alive and contains blood. After the surgery of these tissues, there may be some swelling and a small amount of bruising depending on the tissue sensitivity of the patient. If it occurs, it will be over within a week.
Will my nose tip fall droop?
Theoretically yes, but surgeons with sufficient experience usually do not encounter this problem. Remember, in every nose surgery, the nose swells a little, then the swelling goes down. This level, where the nose descends, is not considered as a droop in the tip of the nose, it should not be confused. The surgeon has already planned or should have planned the level at which that swelling will go down. What is called a nasal tip droop is the level loss of the tip of the nose beyond the elimination of this swelling, which does not happen in a nose that has been repaired with the right technique. However, if there is an infection, if the cartilage dissolves the tip will droop, if you get hit it droops, noses with advanced age, heavy skin, rhinophyma droop. Other than than, the tip of the nose has no business drooping.
Will you break my nasal bones?
Breaking sounds a bit harsh. That does not describe a special surgery like rhinoplasty. In rhinoplasty, maneuvers are measured in millimeters and excess bone or cartilage (if any) is measured and cut and removed. Yes, in closed rhinoplasty, we do this by opening a tiny hole on your nose without cutting.
Are tampons used in rhinoplasty?
If there is no interaction with the septum (middle wall of the nose) or concha, there is usually no need to use tampons or splints. If there is such a surgery, we still do not use tampons. What we use are simple, fine silicone supports called “splints”. The holes in the middle facilitate breathing and they come out very easily.
Will my breathing problem get better?
The source of respiratory problems that may occur in the nose are:
- Deviations in the septum
- Concha (nasal growths) growths
- Curvatures of the nasal skeleton
- Valve stenosis at the nasal entrance
- Paralyzed (paralysis) Nose (with the muscles of the back of the nose not functioning)
- Empty Nose Syndrome
- Body Dysmorphic Disorders
Except for the last three issues in the list of respiratory problems above, all other causes can be corrected during rhinoplasty and your breathing can be facilitated simultaneously. The last three issues will require additional treatments.
Will my nostrils become smaller?
Yes, if necessary. In my own practice, I reduce the nostrils of 95% of my patients during rhinoplasty. I think it is a shortcoming not to downscale the nostrils of a nose that gets downscaled in every other dimension. This process can also be done by minimizing the fleshy structure of the nostrils with or without reducing the actual holes. Confused? For your information, the fleshy edges of the nostrils can be finetuned without downsizing the nostrils. It is important to reduce the nostrils of some patients without causing respiratory problems.
Is Male Nose Aesthetics Different?
There are some differences between male rhinoplasty and female rhinoplasty in terms of both the surgical process and aesthetic approaches. These are as follows;
- The male nose is generally thicker, so the swelling is slightly more and takes a longer time to settle down.
- Since the male bone structure is thicker, more care should be taken in terms of bruising and swelling.
- The skin of the male nose is more oily, and it is more difficult to clean and care for the skin after surgery. If black spots, also called comedones, are allowed to accumulate, the nostril reduction incision can become somewhat obvious.
- The male nose should not be given a curve, otherwise it will take on a feminine look, which I think is a disaster.
- The upturn of the male nose (nasolabial angle) should not be more than 90 degrees. While a nose tip uplift of 95-100 degrees in women looks nice and attractive, it is not attractive in men
When is the patient discharged?
Since rhinoplasty surgery is done under general anesthesia, our patients spend the first night in the hospital and are discharged the next morning. Of course, in some special cases, we discharge our patients on the day of the procedure.
Things to Know after Nose Aesthetics
- Rhinoplasty has a special prescription. We will give you your prescription when you leave the hospital. Do not use anything other than what is on the prescription without informing us.
- Remember that you had surgery, you might see some blood, this is normal.
- We will tell you how to do special cleaning and washing applications in addition to the basic treatment drugs in the prescription.
- Never, ever, ever hit your nose. This is the most important issue. Whatever the size of the blow you receive, talk to your doctor so we can be alert to various possibilities. I emphasize this especially because it is the most frequently told lie…
- Do not turn left or right while sleeping, use a sleeping pillow.
- Come to your check-ups regularly.
- Do not get into unnecessary stress now that your surgery is over. Stress can raise your blood pressure and cause bleeding and unnecessary swelling and bruising.
- Do not try to draw unnecessary and meaningless conclusions about your nose result when you have just had the operation and the nasal swelling is still evident. It will take a year for the nose to fully settle after the operation.
- Be positive and enjoy. Experience reveals that positive people heal better.
What is the complication rate in rhinoplasty?
Certainly. There are many standard surgical complications in rhinoplasty, such as crookedness, excessive bleeding, adhesions, graft shifts, excessive swelling and bruising, perforation of the septum, infection, suture reaction, reactions to drugs used, anesthesia complications… The average complication rate in international publications is around 10%. This varies from surgeon to surgeon. My average is around 6%. Half of them are simple issues that can be remedied in 5-10 minutes chatting in the office environment. My rate of re-entering the operating room is 2-3%. There is a saying in surgery that you should not forget: “The doctor who doesn’t do surgery has no complications”.
Complete Healing of the Nose after Rhinoplasty
Theoretically, it takes a year for a wound to heal. Of course, progress is being made gradually at each step of this process. The settlement time of secondary cases can take longer than one year.
Can rhinoplasty be reverted?
There is a partial chance of reverting rhinoplasty. By taking cartilage and fascia tissues from other parts of the body, we can give your nose a new arch and increase its volume. Has the patient had a bad nose surgery and is looking for his former nose, or does he miss his former rough arched state, which was more characteristic, although there was no problem with his surgery? We must describe the problem accurately. First of all, I need to do a detailed examination to be able to explain what and to what extent I can fix it. It should be kept in mind that when rebuilding a previously operated nose, we might need to use some materials as grafts from rib cartilage, ear cartilage, and a membrane in the temple area. You can access more detailed article about revision rhinoplasty in my article at https://www.ozanbalik.com/en/revision-rhinoplasty/.
